The museum’s theme is “Transportation,” and guests will see the most diverse collection of antique cars, trucks, license plates and signs in northern BC. Learn why Fort Nelson is known as “the gateway to the Northern Rockies.” Visitors will also discover the surprising story behind the construction of the Alcan Highway and other displays that demonstrate Fort Nelson’s distinctive place in the early days of exploration, mining and hunting. Come browse on your own or take part in an enlightening interpretive tour. The museum also hosts educational and cultural events throughout the season.

Meet The Fort Nelson Historical Society & Museum Staff

The Fort Nelson Heritage Museum is owned and operated by the Fort Nelson Historical Society. Curator Marl Brown has a passion for history as well as for the town of Fort Nelson. He wanted to ensure that residents and visitors alike would have the opportunity to learn about the area's past and its important contributions to the development of BC's north and the Alcan Highway. He and Business Manager Kim Eglinski, as well as Jayme Unruh, Curator in Training, are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the museum, which is open full-time daily between May and the September long weekend. Starting in the winter of 2017, the museum and the gift shop will also be open Friday and Saturday afternoons for the months of November and December.

The board and staff of the Fort Nelson Heritage Museum understand the importance of promoting and supporting their small town and its economy. Doing your business in Fort Nelson, notes Marl, means that your money goes directly into the local community and benefits the people who live here. Both Marl and Kim believe that there is room for more small businesses in Fort Nelson and that the community is poised to grow, thanks to locals who are committed to a sustainable economy.
